ZF 8HP Controller Integration for RM-Primis ECU
The RM-Primis ECU includes native ZF 8HP transmission control through CAN bus communication with the original 8HP TCU. This allows supported ZF 8HP transmissions to be used in swaps and standalone ECU conversions without adding a separate aftermarket 8HP controller box.
This integration is intended for RM-Primis users running ZF 8HP45, 8HP50, 8HP70 and selected 8HP75 transmissions. It is suitable for BMW swaps, engine conversions, restomods, performance builds and custom chassis projects where a modern 8-speed automatic transmission is required.
RM-Primis communicates with the original transmission control unit inside the 8HP mechatronics. The transmission hardware stays sealed, while RM-Primis provides the engine-side CAN messages required for torque coordination, shift control, diagnostics and shifter communication.
Main Features
- Native ZF 8HP control via CAN bus for supported RM-Primis ECU setups.
- No separate aftermarket 8HP controller required for supported applications.
- Original 8HP TCU retained inside the transmission mechatronics.
- Non-invasive installation with no internal transmission modification required for supported setups.
- OEM-style engine and gearbox communication for torque coordination during shifts.
- BMW F-Series 8HP support with direct CAN control on typical supported applications.
- Built-in diagnostics through RM-Tuner, including DTC read/clear, firmware information and live TCU status.
- BMW F-Series electronic shifter support, including manual mode and paddle support where fitted and configured.
- TCU flashing support for selected BMW E-Series, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Jaguar/Land Rover and other ZF 8HP applications.
How RM-Primis Controls the ZF 8HP
The ZF 8HP transmission contains an internal mechatronics unit with a built-in TCU. Instead of replacing this internal controller, RM-Primis communicates with it over CAN bus in a similar way to an OEM engine ECU.
During operation, RM-Primis can exchange the required messages for gear selection, torque requests, torque limits, shift status, diagnostic information and shifter position. This allows the engine and transmission to work together instead of operating as two disconnected systems.
During a shift, the 8HP TCU can request engine torque reduction. RM-Primis can then manage the engine side of the shift, helping the transmission achieve smoother and safer gear changes.
Supported ZF 8HP Variants
The ZF 8HP family is used across BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and many other vehicles. Compatibility depends on the exact transmission model, donor vehicle, TCU hardware and firmware.
| Transmission | Typical Use | RM-Primis Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ZF 8HP45 | BMW 3-Series, 5-Series and lighter-duty 8HP applications | Common BMW swap option. Usually easiest when based on BMW F-Series compatible hardware. |
| ZF 8HP50 | Later BMW F-Series and G-Series applications | Supported where the CAN protocol and TCU firmware are compatible. Some G-Series applications may need setup support. |
| ZF 8HP70 | BMW, Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Ram and higher-torque swaps | Popular for performance conversions. Non-BMW units normally require TCU flashing before use with RM-Primis. |
| ZF 8HP75 | Later BMW, SUV and higher-torque applications | Compatibility depends on TCU hardware and firmware. Contact us with the TCU part number before ordering. |
| ZF 8HP90 / 8HP95 | Heavy-duty and very high torque applications | Part-number confirmation required before planning the build. |
Compatibility by Donor Vehicle / TCU Type
| Donor / Platform | Status | What Is Required |
|---|---|---|
| BMW F-Series F30, F32, F10, F15 and similar | Usually plug-and-play over CAN | No TCU flashing or external programmer normally required for supported F-Series 8HP45, 8HP50 and 8HP70 setups. |
| BMW G-Series | Supported with checks | Same general interface style as F-Series, but some models may need CAN protocol adjustments. Contact us with donor details. |
| BMW E-Series E90, E70 and similar conversions | TCU flashing required | The TCU normally needs compatible F-Series style firmware before RM-Primis CAN control can be used. |
| Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep / Ram Charger, Challenger, Ram 1500, Grand Cherokee and similar | TCU flashing required | These TCUs normally need to be flashed to compatible logic before RM-Primis CAN control can be used. |
| Jaguar / Land Rover | Part-number check required | TCU flashing is normally required. Contact us with the TCU part number before ordering. |
| Maserati / Alfa Romeo / Other 8HP Applications | Part-number check required | Support depends on TCU hardware compatibility with the required firmware and CAN protocol. |
Free TCU Flashing Service
Some ZF 8HP transmissions require the TCU electronics to be flashed to compatible firmware before RM-Primis can control them correctly over CAN bus.
For supported applications, we offer a free TCU flashing service for RM-Primis 8HP integration.
- Send us the TCU electronics only, not the full transmission.
- We flash compatible firmware and return the TCU ready for RM-Primis integration.
- Typical turnaround time is 1–2 business days after arrival.
- Please contact us first with your TCU part number so compatibility can be confirmed.
Important: Do not send the complete gearbox. Only the TCU electronics are required where flashing is possible.
BMW F-Series Shifter Support
RM-Primis currently supports the BMW F-Series electronic shifter for ZF 8HP control. This allows a clean OEM-style interior installation with gear selection, manual mode and paddle-shift support where fitted and configured.
Other shifter types, including Jaguar rotary selectors, Jeep selectors or aftermarket paddle systems, may be possible depending on the project. Contact us with your shifter type and intended wiring layout before ordering.
We also stock the required BMW 8-pin and 10-pin shifter connectors for clean wiring:
BMW 8HP shifter connectors.
Wiring Harness and Installation Parts
For a cleaner installation, we recommend using the RM Racing Electronics ZF 8HP universal wiring harness. It simplifies the main connections between RM-Primis, the 8HP transmission, CAN wiring, power, ground and the required control wiring.
For some builds, a timed relay may also be required so the 8HP TCU can remain powered briefly after ignition off and shut down correctly.
- ZF 8HP universal wiring harness / loom
- ZF 8HP timed relay
- BMW 8HP shifter 8-pin and 10-pin connectors
- All ZF 8HP controller and wiring parts
What We Need Before Ordering
Before ordering for any non-BMW F-Series application, please contact us with the following information:
- ZF 8HP variant, for example 8HP45, 8HP50, 8HP70 or 8HP75.
- Donor vehicle make, model and year.
- TCU part number or clear photos of the TCU label.
- Shifter type you plan to use.
- Engine and ECU setup.
- Whether the gearbox is installed in the vehicle or still on the bench.
This information allows us to confirm whether your setup is direct CAN, requires flashing, or needs further compatibility checking.
